Time Session Description
9:00 - 9:30 Welcome and Introduction Introduction to the program and the guest lecturers. Overview of the Summer School's goals and the importance of sound in communication.
9:30 - 12:00 Session 1: The Psychology of Music
Speaker: Professor Nicola Dibben (University of Sheffield)
Professor Dibben explores how music influences our perception of identity and worldview. She discusses the role of popular music in social and cultural contexts and its impact on emotions and cognitive processes. Participants analyze music excerpts and reflect on the emotions and thoughts they evoke. Discussion on psychological theories behind musical perception and self-identity.
12:00 - 13:00 Lunch Break Opportunity to network with speakers and other participants.
13:00 - 15:30 Session 2: The Language of Birds
Speaker: Dr. Timothy Gentner (UC San Diego)
Dr. Gentner investigates bird communication, particularly in starlings, and how it helps us understand the neural basis of human language. His research connects bird behavior with human communication. Participants listen to bird sounds and attempt to imitate them. Discussion on how bird communication informs our understanding of language and cognitive processes in humans.
15:30 - 16:00 Coffee Break Time to relax and exchange ideas with other participants.
16:00 - 17:00 Assignment Announcement and Reflection At the end of the day, speakers will announce assignments that participants must complete based on the two sessions of the day. These assignments are due within 4 weeks.
